Ruby's day of freedom – by Maria Grou
| I have seen so many Greyhounds
running round at the park off the lead and wished I could do that
with my two. I have a fear of dogs off the lead attacking my dogs
and an even bigger fear of losing my 2 very special Greyhounds, But
the thought of watching them running round was something I wanted
and I felt guilty that they didn't go off the lead . So I started
them on re-call training in the garden which went fine. Then, I
bought them both a 50 ft lunge lead each. This was great as it gave
them a lot more freedom .My hubby had been working with Ruby when he
took her for a walk over the back field, tucking her lead in, and
she was very good. Whereas Beau was a nightmare; my hubby had Beau's
collar on too tight one walk and went to loosen it, dropped the
lead, and whoosh Beau was on a bid for freedom... It took 20 minutes
to corner him and that was after he ran into the dance hall. (I live
opposite a sports centre.) So he needs a lot more work, me think's
!!!! So Ruby's big day came when she was going to be let off the
lead and the family went to Spade Oak. It has fenced in fields and
the River Thames on the other side. My heart was going like crazy
and I felt very sick, but we let her off and it was worth all the
nerves to watch her running and playing. She was very responsive
when called back, and I now can't wait to take her again. I know in
the pictures, the one where she is sitting by the water she is
spending a penny, but I like to think she is sitting by the river
Thames !!! |
