The two branches of Village Books, in Dulwich Village and Wandsworth
Common, must have a claim to be Britain’s most dog-friendly
bookshops. Not only do we allow dogs big and small to accompany
their owners into our shops, occasionally offering them a treat from
behind the till, but this year we have been raising money for a
local greyhound charity, by donating £1 for each copy sold of
Michael Morpurgo’s novel Born to Run. In the lead up to Christmas
our two shops sold a grand total of 245 copies of this wonderful
children’s novel telling the story of a maltreated greyhound, and
raised £245 for Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare, a charity based in
Hersham, Surrey. Last Tuesday, 11th March, the patron of the
charity, One Foot in the Grave star Annette Crosbie, together with
her daughter, actress Selina Griffiths, and their three beautiful
rescued greyhounds, visited our Wandsworth Common shop to collect a
cheque which will hopefully go towards lots of tins of dog food for
the hungry hounds!
