A Fairy tale ending

Seven months ago we were saddened to learn that Sam and Elly, two of our greyhounds, were being returned to our kennels due to a change in family circumstances.

Their Mum and Dad were devastated. As their world fell apart around them the decision to part with Sam and Elly was the final blow. Wendy, their mum, said it was the worse moment in her life. Nothing compared to giving up her beloved hounds.

Time moved on, and we kept in touch with Wendy to let her know how Sam and Elly were doing. Wendy spent a miserable Christmas far from her home, reliant on the kindness of her relatives, and trying to come to terms with all that had happened. The sadness in her voice told us how difficult she was finding it to believe that there was light at the end of this particular tunnel.

Several people showed an interest in Elly, who had lived with cats, but nothing came to fruition . Sam, a strange little boy that in all honesty only a mother could love, settled into kennel life. He had his beloved Elly with him, and he seemed content with that.

With the New Year came the first snippets of news from Wendy that all was not lost, and there was a possibility that at some point in the future she would once again have a place to call home. Would we therefore consider keeping Sam for her, and if no-one had offered Elly a home, her as well?

The chance that Sam and Elly could once again be re-united with their Mum and Dad was too good to pass up. Of course we would. “Don’t worry,” we told Wendy, “They’re here, they’re safe and sound, and they will be waiting for you when you’re ready.” “Besides,” I added, “who else would want Sam?”

Well, the months slipped by, dates were mentioned then changed, but at long last the day came. Last Sunday, 27th May 2007 we were absolutely delighted to bear witness to Sam and Elly being reunited with Wendy and Peter.
See, I told you this story had a fairy tale ending, and you don’t get many of those to the pound.
